![]() ![]() Gloria travels to Cuba and falls in love with a Cuban. A lot of people were surprised, when I published Pao, to learn there is a very strong Chinese community in Jamaica. Will there be a third novel? Yes, Fay, who also has Chinese heritage. I have a background in youth work: I’ve always been very interested in those issues. Pao was very much focused on race and colour whereas in Gloria I focus on gender and sexuality. ![]() Gloria is a poor black woman of African heritage her Jamaica is very different to that of Pao’s, who is a Chinese immigrant. Why did you want to link the two books like that? Jamaica’s national anthem is: ‘Out of many, one people.’ I wanted to show that there are many Jamaicas. Gloria crops up in your first novel Pao – in fact, both books share similar characters and a similar time frame. ![]()
